Why Kickstarter part 2

As I began researching the economics of getting a children’s book published and distributed, I was surprised at the different elements involved. Most of us don’t know what goes behind it, so thought it might be interesting to know – Illustrations – Unless you are a highly skilled artist yourself, which many of us do not have the good fortune to be 🙂 – Illustrations can be the most expensive (and important) component. Highly professional illustrators will probably do a 25-page children’s book for $5K. That is the low end, believe me. There are… Read More »Why Kickstarter part 2

Why Kickstarter part 1

– Traditional publishers receive, by one estimate I read, more than 20,000 manuscripts of which 30 are chosen that is ~ 0.1% – Multicultural content in children’s books at maybe 10% (this is a researched statistic). South Asian will be far lower – So by inference, chances of a South Asian themed book being picked by a big publisher? less than 0.01% and depending on so many other factors This is my own inferred calculation, not perfect, but it gives an idea of how difficult it is to break into the children’s books market. My… Read More »Why Kickstarter part 1

Tearing open a memory

Our household has been trying to go paperless in the kitchen for a while. To achieve this goal, we bought several different varieties of kitchen cloths – patterned, white, colorful sets. Our process is working slowly, but we have been encountering some operations issues. One of us likes to wring the cloth after use and keep it as such on the sink, the other one wants to lay it out to dry on the partition of the sink. One of us likes to hang them for use on the kitchen cabinet door handles, the other one… Read More »Tearing open a memory

Earlier this year I self-published a children’s book called “Big Red Firetruck!” The inspiration was a bedtime story session with my then three-year-old. It was a fun project, but as I got deeper into it and started researching the children’s book market, I realized a few things: 37% of children in the US identify themselves as multicultural, yet only about 10-15% of the children’s… Read More »â€˜TEN GULAB JAMUNS’ BOOK INTRODUCES SOUTH ASIAN CULTURE TO CHILDREN – KICKSTARTER via Bicultural Mama

2 days to launch!

2 days to launch of my Kickstarter. It could mean seeing my idea, my story, my passion taking shape. It could mean actually holding those books that I have visualized so many times over. I am nervous. The goal seems daunting. How can I reach those hundreds of people? Will they like what I am offering? Like the several Kickstarter advice giving blogs predicted I am racked by self-doubt. I feel vulnerable and uncertain. It is a similar feeling to 1 – before my wedding and 2 – before taking up a Marathon goal. Like on… Read More »2 days to launch!

Tell us about your book Big Red Firetruck! What was your inspiration for this book? I have always dreamed of being an author. After a long career in corporate finance, I gave myself the permission to pursue my passion for writing. I partnered with a very talented friend of mine Rashmi Menon who did the illustrations for this. In this humorous… Read More »An interview with Sunanda on my book and upcoming projects

Why Multiculturalism in Children’s Literature is Important via Chatterblock.com

http://www.chatterblock.com/articles/1484/why-multiculturalism-in-childrens-literature-is-important/ There is a need for diversity in children’s books. This is my personal perspective on the issue. …Curly hair, very fair. Eyes are blue, lovely too. Teacher’s pet, is that you? Yes Yes Yes. So went a nursery rhyme I learned in school. This was in India, where of the 1.2 billion population very few have fair skin and blue eyes. Being the teacher’s pet felt unachievable, a far-off fantasy. In a country where fair skin is inexplicably revered, I remember how when we went to social gatherings, uncles and aunts would fawn over… Read More »Why Multiculturalism in Children’s Literature is Important via Chatterblock.com

Original post here 2. Sandhya Acharya’s book, Big Red Firetruck! I love when authors contact me, excited about their new books or projects. Here’s one that came across my desk a little while ago. Big Red Firetruck! has enamored many a child. Indeed, children love cars, trains, trucks anything that moves! In this humorous short story, young Idu (Ee-doo) teaches his younger brother Adu (Aa-doo) all about fire and fire trucks. Young Idu is reminded of fire looking at the hot sun. He asks his brother to bring him a Fire Truck. Adu doesn’t know… Read More »Coming up Ten Gulab Jamuns with book review of Big Red Firetruck! by letmeoutcreative

Many-mes

Aired on KQED on Oct 04, 2016 06:43 AM Recently, I gathered with 454 applicants from 61 countries to pledge allegiance to the United States of America. I stood there, nervously examining my voter registration card, passport application, a notebook of the U.S. Constitution. Ahead on the stage, the proud flag – red, white and blue, 50 stars and 13 stripes — beckoned me. I remembered a conversation I had had with my four-year old son a few days back. We had spotted a flag on our way to pre-school and I had excitedly pointed… Read More »Many-mes

My Hero of Woodhams Road!

Published on Indian Moms Connect on Sep 29, 2016 http://www.indianmomsconnect.com/2016/09/29/about-a-shoe/ A shoe is a strange thing to write about, but stranger things have been written about. I once wrote a poem about a lonely sock. That one was a tad sad. This one, though, has a happy ending. I lost a shoe. It belonged to my one-year-old. It was new. I just got it 2 days back. It was a dark navy blue that matched with most outfits. The front had a little orangeish pink tongue painted on it. One of the two straps had… Read More »My Hero of Woodhams Road!
