This was a much-awaited book and it did not disappoint A little girl is in the car with her family when suddenly her parents spot Watercress on the side of the road. Original destination forgotten, they all get down to pluck handfuls. The little girl’s dress is sullied and her boots wet but more than that, she is embarrassed by her family. She hopes no one has seen them. At home, she is reluctant to eat the meal cooked with Watercress. A heartfelt conversation with her mom finally makes her see her family in a different light. She comes to terms and takes pride in her identity. This is a masterfully crafted story that is gentle but powerful. The illustrations add to the beauty of the book, making the reading seamless. As immigrants, first or second generation, we all struggle with nostalgia, the pressure to fit in, and the search for our unique identity. This book gives expression to all those feelings and turns the whole experience into something magical. It’s a therapy session in a picture book. Your kids will love it and so will you.
