Why Kickstarter part 1

– Traditional publishers receive, by one estimate I read, more than 20,000 manuscripts of which 30 are chosen that is ~ 0.1% – Multicultural content in children’s books at maybe 10% (this is a researched statistic). South Asian will be far lower – So by inference, chances of a South Asian themed book being picked by a big publisher? less than 0.01% and depending on so many other factors This is my own inferred calculation, not perfect, but it gives an idea of how difficult it is to break into the children’s books market. Tearing open a memory

Our household has been trying to go paperless in the kitchen for a while. To achieve this goal, we bought several different varieties of kitchen cloths – patterned, white, colorful sets. Our process is working slowly, but we have been encountering some operations issues. One of us likes to wring the cloth after use and keep it as such on the sink, the other one wants to lay it out to dry on the partition of the sink. One of us likes to hang them for use on the kitchen cabinet door handles, the other one… Read More »Tearing open a memory

‘TEN GULAB JAMUNS’ BOOK INTRODUCES SOUTH ASIAN CULTURE TO CHILDREN – KICKSTARTER via Bicultural Mama

Earlier this year I self-published a children’s book called “Big Red Firetruck!” The inspiration was a bedtime story session with my then three-year-old. It was a fun project, but as I got deeper into it and started researching the children’s book market, I realized a few things: 37% of children in the US identify themselves as multicultural, yet only about 10-15% of the children’s… Read More »‘TEN GULAB JAMUNS’ BOOK INTRODUCES SOUTH ASIAN CULTURE TO CHILDREN – KICKSTARTER via Bicultural Mama

2 days to launch!

2 days to launch of my Kickstarter. It could mean seeing my idea, my story, my passion taking shape. It could mean actually holding those books that I have visualized so many times over. I am nervous. The goal seems daunting. How can I reach those hundreds of people? Will they like what I am offering? Like the several Kickstarter advice giving blogs predicted I am racked by self-doubt. I feel vulnerable and uncertain. It is a similar feeling to 1 – before my wedding and 2 – before taking up a Marathon goal. Like on… Read More »2 days to launch!

Tell us about your book Big Red Firetruck! What was your inspiration for this book? I have always dreamed of being an author. My first Marathon – A tale of trots

The day before the race was about lists. Gu gels and salt packed in individual pouches, sugar tablets loaded, cap picked out, T-shirt selected. I went over my list of gear over and over again. I cut my toenails, readied my garbage bag, drained my legs. I felt prepared and pumped. I visualized myself at the finish line in glory, celebrating. I went to bed early. But, I could not sleep. I tossed and turned. Obsessing over details, I suddenly wanted to wear my blue long sleeve shirt. I woke up an hour into my… Read More »My first Marathon – A tale of trots

Naming rights – KQED

Perspectives Naming Rights Sandhya Acharya Feb 10, 2016 06:43 AM By Sandhya AcharyaFEBRUARY 10, 2016 SHARE It was evaluation day at preschool. I shifted uncomfortably in the little toddler seat feeling like Goliath at Lilliput’s table. My 3.5-year old’s sincere teacher spread out a sheaf of papers of work and grades. “This is your son writing his name,” she announced. She showed me incoherent scribbling. Interesting shapes, but no semblance of an alphabet. I grimaced at the 9-lettered challenge facing my son. S I D D H A R T H. It is a beautiful name… Read More »Naming rights – KQED

When Dad Friends you

Published on KQED (NPR) Perspectives on Apr 19, 2016 https://www.kqed.org/perspectives/201601134325/when-dad-friends-you Pe I woke up one morning to the petulant ping of a Facebook notification. It was a friend request, from my father. I ignored it, shuddering to think what it would mean to have my father as a friend. I would have to stay away from controversial posts, reveal judicious little about my everyday doings, filter my comments. The idea that my father would have a keyhole to peer into my life, was unnerving. Over the next few days, I got other disconcerting notifications. My… Read More »When Dad Friends you

The story of Valentines Day

It is that time of the year again. It is Valentine’s Day. Husbands and wives, boyfriends, and girlfriends will go into a frenzy trying to check all the boxes – chocolates, flowers, dinner, dazzle. But what is the story of Valentine’s day? History is a bit unclear on it. According to some reports, there was a certain Saint Valentine who clandestinely got together couples and was persecuted for Christian beliefs. Other theories purport that it was originally a pagan festivity of fertility superseded by Christian tradition. Nobody knows for sure. But that’s not the story.… Read More »The story of Valentines Day
