Super Bowl and me

It’s Super Bowl weekend. 114 million people will be watching. $300 million will be spent on Ads. 4 million Pizza will be sold. 8 million pounds of guacamole will be consumed. I remember the first time I was introduced to this game. It seemed like a magical shared experience that I felt obligated to be a part of. I gathered my contribution to the chips and dips and made my way to a friends house. It started out ok with a spread of the choicest snacks. I sat with the rest of my friends ready… Read More »Super Bowl and me

A fairytale

Once upon a time – a time far away, we wrote letters to communicate. We learnt where to add the name and address of the sender and sendee, we wrote a subject line, we added a greeting. We wrote about the grievance, the report, the plea and we sealed it with another heartfelt greeting and good-bye message. We pasted a stamp and waited for replies. In between we did other things – like Life. Then the internet came by. It unfurled its wide arms inviting us into a sea of possibilities. Space and time ceased… Read More »A fairytale

The gift of Rituals

When I was younger, religion seemed something lofty to attain, pious, precious. Rituals, on the other hand, seemed superfluous and trivial. Today, religion is at best an ambiguous presence I am happy to leave alone. It is the rituals today that endear me, enchant me. It is the rituals that I am convinced hold the key to creating a sense of family, culture and memories for my children. We all know how precious rituals are. They are everywhere. It is the favorite coffee shop you go to after your morning run, the trip to grandmas… Read More »The gift of Rituals

Feeling right

Its strange sometimesHow right you feelAll along through everything you don’t seeAll along feeling so right – Until one day you see the lightBut till then you float, you flowMuch less in control, you let it goSo one day when you see the lightAnd from all along when you were just not rightYou remember the buoying, the tossing the free fallingAnd smile at all the things you believedAnd right or wrong – you feel

Reading Vikram Seth

I was reading J Krishnamurthy’s book – The first and last freedom where he talks about seeking and finding happiness or gratification. Something about what he had written, sparked a memory somewhere. It was probably 1997. We had organized our very first book exhibition at the college campus. It was a very busy 3 days and of course several days of pre-work that had gone into it. There were a lot of things that happened during this time, however, today I shall relate one incident. It was the end of day 2 I think. We… Read More »Reading Vikram Seth

“There is no happy ending. But there is the day. The sun, the rain. The chance to say I love you. The willingness to forgive. The courage to remember. The opportunity to be kind. The ability to laugh and to be generous. The fact that we can choose our joy in each moment, no matter what. This, in itself, is the miracle.” Sixtyfive Roses – Heather Summerhayes Cariou

Change

What am I holding on to?Change that clinks in my pocketIs that a reassuranceA rational explanation of “what is”Why does it then weigh me down? Its only change after-all

Lesson about Life

I just read about a cancer patient – a young 18 year old who lost his life to cancer. But he did it while fighting back and living life. Sometimes when I read these stories, I am ashamed I ever complain about my life. When people live life “inspite of” , it makes you wonder if you are using all your gifts, if you are making the best of what you have.Isn’t there a song that says – Live like like you were dying.. Do something new today!
